The history of the development of three-dimensional modeling

Two-dimensional modeling receded into the background and was replaced by 3D modeling. It quickly became widespread and today covers almost all spheres of activity. It is used in construction, architecture, engineering and many other industries. Most spheres, productions are already impossible to imagine without 3D-images, and modern users already require high-quality graphics, because nothing stands still.

However, everything was different a short time ago. How it all began? When did people first learn what 3D modeling is and who created it?

Behind a 3D technology lies a powerful computing device. For the first time, mathematical relationships that described the formation of a digital model of objects and algorithms for miscalculations became known back in the 1960s. Then, the insufficiently powerful hardware did not allow to create even simple 3D images, so the question of developing a computer program for generating three-dimensional models based on sketches was acute. And already in the 1960s, in the city of Jutta (USA), such a program was launched. Its creators were Ivan Sutherland and David Evanson. In the 70s, their followers worked intensively on the technology of dealing with 3D graphics and animation.

Nobody took this work seriously, but fundamental researches still showed that these were the first step towards tremendous changes and the development of powerful technology that would change the concept of using computer graphics. It is necessary to admit that materials of the 60-70s are still used for visualization.

Time passed and geometric shapes became more complicated. Together with simple combinations, a possibility of surface modeling appeared. This was a huge breakthrough, as it allowed to create any type of forms, including models of living organisms. This amazed the imagination of ordinary users and fueled interest to 3D.

But the development of 3D modeling did not stop there either. The exact mathematical description of geometry is very important, but the quality of the object display is no less significant. Achievements of physicists helped to solve this issue. The basis of visualization methods was based on fundamental work in the sphere of optics on the absorption, refraction and reflection of light rays.

90s - wide spreading

In connection with the growth of PC performance in the 90s, budget applications for 3D modeling appeared. This allowed to make it available to any user. Easy to learn, small system requirements ensured the rapid spread and popularity of 3D modeling. Along with the manufacturers of well-known, «powerful» programs, highly specialized plug-in developers began to appear. For this period of time it was necessary to release such «lightweight»; programs as SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.

3D modeling became widely spread not only in design, but also in engineering projection. Already in the 90s it began to be used very intensively in this sphere of activity. The reasons for this were the ability to create complex shapes, simplicity in design, and the ability to add and delete parts.

CAD systems in engineering design are of great importance. They are designed to create three-dimensional models of buildings, cars, other objects, for design documentation, design drawings.

The possibilities of 3D technologies are endless. It allows to create a realistic picture of any object and is used today in completely different spheres of activities - architecture, jewellery, construction, car manufacturing, prototyping, advertising, etc. Three-dimensional modeling has many advantages, but the main one is excellent visualization. Thanks to the software capabilities, you can see a high degree of detalization and make a model as close to reality as possible. There is no difficulty in access to information and studying of 3D modeling either. Internet resources offer a great amount of literature for self-study. To date, there are highly qualified professionals who work brilliantly in 3D. 3D modeling rightfully became popular, especially considering a fact that initially few people believed in it.
